Describe your FCA Background.
My involvement with FCA was really a big happy accident! When I was in High School (WMHS, Go Falcons!!) I was heavily involved with a ministry called Campus Life, and the winter of Junior year I had heard that there was a club called FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) that met during flex so I decided to check it out. Getting there, I realized there was very little about the club that I recognized from my past experiences with Campus Life, but the time spent was deep and relational and I wanted to get more involved, so after a few months of attending I became a leader with WMHS FCA!
Fast forward to the winter of my freshman year at college, I had little contact with anyone with FCA and was actually looking to intern with Campus Life. After doing some digging, a friend who had interned with Campus Life told me that they were not accepting any more interns, but that FCA was! This led to one of the most transformational summers I have had to date, and was where I felt the first tugging at my heart to take FCA ministry seriously!
How has God used FCA in your life?
One of the coolest things about the journey from intern to staff was the transformation that came as I grew in my faith. I went into my college years with a pretty solid foundation as far as upbringing was concerned. I was the kid who grew up in Sunday school and knew all the Bible stories and got baptized at 7, and while I had heard that the dynamic between God and the Christ follower is a relationship it never really clicked for me; I knew all the right words and talked the talk, but never really understood what a relationship with God would look like in my life.
My first and second years as an intern challenged me to find accountability and really dive into what it looks like to do life with God at the helm. Fast forward to my last year as an intern, I had this unshakable feeling that while I had grown a ton, I didn’t have any “this is when and where I gave my life to Christ” moment as I kinda just grew up learning more and more about who God was but never had this AH-HA moment. I had begun that process of turning head knowledge into actions, but so much of that transformation was happening behind the scenes and there was little accountability in what was happening in my faith walk.
It was at FCA College Camp that, for the first time in my 14 years after being baptized that I noticed 4 different men, now co-laborers in FCA, bring up this idea of making a public declaration of faith in baptism all at different times and not at all connected to the overall theme of the camp, just in casual conversation or workshops. So after praying and meeting with Nick Richmond, I got baptized in the Chesapeake Bay on Memorial Day 2018!
What is your role going to like as a Part-Time Staff for FCA?
Following that summer, I kept hanging around the CCFCA staff and eventually they called me to a meeting. When I heard that they wanted me to join staff I knew it was something that God had been grooming me for and growing me towards, and I began the process of support raising and as of January 1st I am fully funded, Glory to God! My role will be primarily with the Winters Mill and East Middle FCA huddles, serving their leaders and equipping them to serve their peers!
What are you most excited for in joining Staff?
While I am only just now official staff, I have been involved with my alma mater’s FCA for a few years now and have wanted to see them develop at WMHS for a long time. A couple years ago, Chris joined me at WMHS and really began not only pouring into the students there but also into me as a leader as well, and together by the grace of God we have really developed a culture that is pretty cool and I’m beyond excited to see what God does as we are graduating in the first three year leaders from East Middle this coming year!
